The Impact of Alchemy 04/08/2008
In their well-known attempts to make gold, alchemists also provided the foundation for modern chemistry and material sciences. Known as holding the most comprehensive collection of glass in the world, The Corning Museum of Glass explores Northern European glass of the Baroque period and presents the technical advances in glassmaking made by alchemists during that time. Included in this examination is the creation of colorless lead crystal and gold ruby - - two key developments in the history of glass production and artistry. The Corning Museum of Glass opens Glass of the Alchemists: Lead Crystal-Gold Ruby, 1650–1750 on June 27, 2008. 1 Comment Catching the Sun 04/03/2008
Stained glass artist Erin Moffat created this rich crimson colored Celtic knot suncatcher using the Tiffany copper foil method. More of her work including her original acrylic paintings in luxuriant colors and textures can be found in her shop, Colour and Light, and you can learn more about this artist by visiting her blog. Erin writes, "I adore the beauty of glass, and I am so happy to be able to create with it!" - - and, Erin, we look forward to seeing more! Handmade Glass Finds 03/30/2008

These cuffs are bursting with light and color, and are entirely handmade! After cutting, heating and shaping by hand, I employ over a dozen handmaking steps so these original designs transform into cuffs, each with an amazing depth of color that shimmers from within! The last step involves sealing with shiny resin. The same designs and method are used for rings too. I love how the colors pop! -Caroline Stained Glass Petals 03/10/2008
The Lyman Conservatory at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts is hosting its annual Spring Bulb Show. While visiting yesterday morning, I snapped a picture of this orchid, which to me looks like milky translucent stained glass petals - - don't you think so too? The Spring Bulb Show runs until next Sunday, March 16 and is worth a visit if you happen to be nearby. Here is a beautiful silent film that shows the making of a stained glass window. This film was produced in co-operation with James Powell and sons. Watch it for a few seconds, and then I'm sure you'll be drawn in to see it right to the end! Votive Light 02/26/2008
Clicking around Etsy I found this votive of pearly teal flowers, handmade by Racquel's Mosaics. These votives are offered in different styles, and I think it's the candle glow shining through the raised surface of hand-cut stained glass that makes them look enchanting. Raquel's adventures in mosaics are blogged and she is also starting a website, featuring the most whimsical mosaic creations. 'Glad I clicked around Etsy today! Inner Light 02/22/2008
There's a snowstorm brewing here in New England. Quiet snow for quiet thinking. So I took a break away from the jeweler's bench and combined my photo of a window from an old nearby cathedral, which focuses on one very small piece of the whole. Then I added a well-known quote to ponder by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross. The words and the photo go nicely together. Romantic Bridge of Art Glass 02/19/2008
February is the month for flowers, chocolates, and endearments, and with this in mind we call your attention to the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. It is a stunning concrete, steel and art glass structure that links the Thea Foss Waterway and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, Washington. Completed in 2002, this commissioned artwork of Dale Chihuly (who was born in Tacoma) is the focal point, and the bridge is considered one of the area's most romantic places for watching the sunset. For those who would like the look of stained glass as a temporary and affordable option, Artscape offers decorative stained glass film. If you don't like the results, its low cost means you can simply remove it and maybe even try another. The one pictured above is called "Magnolia", and several other designs are available, including the look of beveled glass. | The art of light inspires, and its play with color captivates. Light's transforming quality fascinates, especially when it is captured by gemstones and antique stained glass that glow from within...
... When not in the studio or taking turns answering your questions, we like to blog. Thanks for stopping by! Al is skilled in the arts of goldsmithing, diamond setting and jewelry designing, and all of the jewelry here, except for mixed media, is Al's - - all meticulously done by Al, no outside assistance. Although there are a few collaborative designs with his wife Caroline, and there are her occasional oohs and ahs and what-if questions. Well, maybe a little more often than that! Most of the photography is done by Caroline, and she designs and handmakes mixed media art jewelry. If you would like to leave a comment to a post on this page - - it's easy!
